Fishing LinesFishing lines are resistant cords used for fishing. They vary in strength, visibility, cast ability or stretch. Additionally some lines are made to submerge and others are meant to float across the surface of the water. Just like baits are designed to work in different environments such as saltwater, freshwater cold or warm waters. Their resistance depends on the kind of fish you want to catch or the method of fishing you choose to employ. They are very durable - some very think for large fish - but they are not unbreakable. Some toxic liquids can damage it so you should be very careful how you preserve it – the best solution is to clean it regularly. Otherwise, a fishing trip can turn into a disaster.
Initially, fishing lines were made out of horse hair, linen or silk covered in a waterproof compound. Today they are made of nylon, polyethylene or Dacron. When a fishing line is made of a single strand it is called monofilament. Some have in their composition fluorocarbon, which makes it less visible to the fish. The drawback is that they get damaged easily, by exposure to sunlight or longer holding under deep waters. There are also Superlines that do not stretch that much and have a smaller span but which are very strong. They are more powerful than steel but are as a result very expensive. A fly line is a specialty fishing line that can float. These have air bubbles inserted and have a backing line for extra strength in case of heavy struggle from big fish. To prevent the fish from deteriorating the line by biting wire fishing lines are employed as leaders. These are made out of metal alloys or titanium. A fishing line is immediately associated with trolling which consist of attaching a lure at end of the line, in order to attract the fish to bite. Big game fishing is very popular among anglers, because it allows the fisherman to fish from a boat, anchored or moving, which can become very exciting. This is practiced on deep open waters where tuna and marlin are the most common catches. Hundreds or even thousand of hooks can hang from a line. This is called long-line fishing. Because this method is highly controversial, some regions have limited the number of hooks a fisherman can use. Long-lines that stay on the surface catch tuna and swordfish while those that go deeper and immerse are meant to catch cod or halibut. This method is commercially effective and is not as damaging as trawling or dredging. Still it is practiced under careful supervision with regard to the ecological well-being of other sea animals or birds’ habitat. It is advised to match the color of your fishing line to the color of the water you are going to fish in, so that you conceal better the line from the fish. They can be green, brown or fluorescent.
