Fishing ReelsFishing reels are essential for practicing angling. They launch or retrieve the fishing line that goes along the fishing rod. Some fishing rods are attached directly on the boat. They were invented in America, in 1820, by George Snyder and shortly became accepted by all anglers. Fishing reels are of different types, depending on the fishing practiced: fly reels, spinning reels, bait reels, spin cast reel, under reel, direct-drive reel and anti reverse reel.
Fly fishing reels are used for fly casting and it consists of releasing line from the reel while launching the rod. These were the most popular, with a simple system that was generally used for catching small fish. New fly fishing rods are very resistant, bearing high temperatures resulted from friction. They can be automatic that use a mechanism which pulls the line at the smallest flick of the handle. They are highly functional but can be too heavy. There are fly fishing reels especially designed for deep waters like the ocean or sea, usually saltwater. They are massive in construction and can hold heavy catches of big fish or in case of long retrieval matches. Spinning reels’ main parts are: handle, support arm, reel foot, anti-reverse lever, skirted spool, drag adjustment knob. These fishing reels have fixed spool and they work best with flexible fishing lines. The problem with these is that the fishing line can often twist on the spool, so anglers usually reposition the line manually to avoid the over twirl. Today, bait fishing reels are made from aluminum, stainless steel or other composites. Unlike the spinning reels, this has a mechanism that prevents the line from getting stuck or twisting under itself on the spool when retrieval is performed. When lures of different weight are attached the casting reels need to be readjusted. Big game bait reels are used in saltwater for catching tuna or marlin among other heavy fish.
Spin cast reels cast light lures and baits and are placed above the fishing rod. They have a fixed spool and a shorter length launch. To operate it, you push a button on the rear side of the fishing reel and cast the rod. The line flies off and when you decide on the distance you push the button to stop the line, which will automatically be arranged on the reel. Fishing reels seem to have the same function but you should pay attention to the number of ball bearings that the reel has. The more they have, the better the reel. You shouldn’t pay a fortune on a fishing reel but neither go cheap. You can trust manufacturers that have been around for a while and that have a tradition in designing fishing tools only. Such examples are: Daiwa, Okuma, Hardy, Shimano or Pflueger. After you bought a good fishing reel you will want to take care of it
and learn some tips about maintenance; cleaning it is the basic method
to make sure your tools will last longer. |
